Yami's origins are unclear, as very little is said about it until the very end of the game, and its very existence is only revealed after Amaterasu confronts Ninetails at the peak of Oni Island.
It is believed that Yami and its demonic legion were being contained within the Ark of Yamato, though Waka was unaware of this when he brought the Ark to the Celestial Plain, fleeing an unknown catastrophe that wiped out the Moon Tribe, which also seems to be caused by Yami. When True Orochi later attacked the Celestial Plain, Waka evacuated the Celestials into the Ark and departed for safety. After they fled, Yami's endless legion of demons attacked, caused the event of the Ark of Yamato genocide and the ark crashed into the mortal world.

For the most part, Yami is a very stoic, melancholy man until angered which is very easy to do. He only seems to care for those who obey him as well. Yami is never quiet about his opinions and doesn't seem to care who believes he's wrong; believing they are just idiots as he's always right.

Issun stared at Yami, holding Denkomaru close to himself warily. He was watching from a hiding place of course, not wanting to be seen by the Lord of darkness himself. Man, if only Ammy was here, she could do something, but Issun was currently alone. He drew a tiny breath and made sure he was hid the best he could, shrinking down a bit nervously.
Yami didn't seem to notice the poncle as he was resting against a tree. In truth, he probably wouldn't even consider Issun the least amount of threat even dispite the fact, after being sealed away for a while, he was powerless.

He huffed and muttered to himself, "If only I could master the brush techniques like Furball..." he said, glancing back at Yami, "Maybe I can go find her and tell her. Who am I kidding..." Issun backed away and huffed
The Dark Lord just sat down now, glancing around whilst mumbling to himself.
